Newry City Councillor Cathal King has welcomed news that Israeli government bonds held on behalf of the local government Officers Superannuation Committee (Nilgosc) have been divested. He has also called on the public to support the BDS campaign which works to end international support for Israel's oppression of Palestinians and pressure Israel to comply with international law.
The local Councillor who has been an active campaigner for the rights of the Palestinian people for many years explained “Effectively by investing in these bonds, public sector workers without their knowledge were funding the Israeli war machine and its current campaigns of genocide in Gaza and the Lebanon.
Thankfully the highlighting of this investment by Nilgosc by the BDS campaign group (Boycott, Divest, Sanctions) has resulted in the practice being stopped”.
Cllr King continued “ Israel can only maintain military occupation and apartheid because of the complicity of governments and corporations around the world.
The boycott, divests, sanctions campaign (BDS) has for a long time targeted specific public bodies and private companies accused of aiding Israeli apartheid and their campaigns of genocide”.
Concluding the Councillor urged people to continue to support the Boycott actions in what ever way they could.
“There has been a considerable pushback by Israel and its alies against the boycott campaign.
However people should be very clear, the use of BDS is an entirely acceptable and proportional action to be taken until there’s a full ceasefire and the apartheid system and occupation of the Palestinian people is ended, and I urge everyone to continue to support this campaign”.
