Write a commentNewry City councillors Valerie Harte and Charlie Casey have met up with with Transport NI representatives at Courtney Hill to discuss residents’ concerns about traffic congestion and speeding.
Speaking about the meeting Cllr Harte said “This meeting was arranged to try and address some serious issues which have been raised by residents regarding ever increasing traffic problems. The Roads Service were represented by Stephen Faulkner and David Johnston, who heard at first hand the concerns.
"It was pointed out that the new school at Courtney Hill, which is near completion, will accommodate 600 pupils which will greatly add to the traffic situation. The residents of this area have for years now been fighting for traffic calming measures as they rightfully fear for the safety of their children and grandchildren."
Councilor Casey added “Everyone fully understands that there are budget restrictions on all departments which are hampering safety measures like the ones needed here on Courtney Hill, but clearly there is a responsibility on those who manage the traffic on our roads and who oversee the potential for further traffic to put in place whatever measures are required to address safety concerns.
Councilor Harte has also contacted the local branch of DOE to report the dangerous overgrowth of hedges and bushes coming from the old Abbey site which are prohibiting walkers and pedestrians from using the footpath and has asked Conor Murphy MLA to write to the Education Department to ascertain if a lollipop person will be provided for the new school once it opens.
