Write a commentSt.Patrick's Primary School Crossmaglen came out on top after 25 teams took part in the Newry, Mourne & Down area heat of the Northern Ireland Primary School Road Safety Quiz at the Canal Court Hotel on Wednesday 16 January.
Windsor Hill PS, Newry were 2nd and Cloughogue Primary were third. The top two schools will now compete against 20 teams who qualify for the March final from the other 10 regional heats.
The annual event, which is for teams of 4 x P7 pupils, is organised by Road Safe NI Charity to promote awareness with primary school children, who are a vulnerable road user group. The table quiz covers road safety, road signs and general knowledge.
All children who took received a certificate. Following the heats, the questions will be made available to all Northern Ireland Primary schools to conduct the quiz in their classrooms.
Davy Jackson of Road Safe NI, commented “We were delighted to see so many local schools take part in this heat. Indeed, this is the biggest
response we have ever had with a total of 220 schools taking part in the 11 heats. It was very apparent from the Newry heat that teachers and pupils have put a lot of effort into preparing for the day. We very much want pupils to learn about road safety and the quiz is great way for them to learn in a fun and interactive way.
Tony McKeown from event sponsors, CRASH Services said, “We are delighted to be able to support the NI Primary School Quiz. We have a close connection with road users and we are pleased to get involved with projects like this. We commend Road Safe NI for all their efforts that got into this quiz every year
The Newry heat was also supported by the Newry, Mourne and Down PCSP, who gave all participants a high vis jacket and the PSNI provided the quiz master.
