Write a commentSt Josephs Boys High School pupils and teachers took their classes on the Albert Basin on Wednesday!
Working with Newry & Mourne District Council, Newry Maritime Association, East Coast Adventure Centre and Carlingford Lough Currach Club, the St Josephs Boys High School as part of its imaginative school community programme were on the canal for lessons from 9.30 a.m. to 3.00 p.m.!!.
The pupils had a go at steering the Currach boats up the Albert Basin and under the two bridges. This event is delivered with the assistance of the Department of Social Development Neighbourhood Renewal Programme as part of the Outdoor Education Project.
Mayor of Newry and Mourne Cllr Michael Ruane commented “I commend St Josephs Boys High School for these types of activities which allow young people to experience different sports and recreational activities as part of their school community programme. I am also delighted that this activity highlights our water courses in Newry City and their potential in regard to water sports and recreational events”.
The Assistant Director of District Development Department Mr Dermot Russell added “This taster session for the pupils of St Josephs Boys High School will allow young people to appreciate the built and natural environment within the City area and promotes the activities of Carlingford Lough Currach Club. It will be interesting to also investigate the possibility of developing this project further with the schools in relation to the construction of currach boats as part of their schools programme”.
