Write a commentThis Sunday 17th April sees The Road to the Rising Centenary Cycle taking place from Newry to Dublin. Cyclists will follow the 100 kilometre route Newry IRB member Patrick Rankin took when he cycled from Newry to Dublin to take part in the Rising.
More than 150 people including Newry MLA Conor Murphy have already signed up for the event, which was jointly organised by both the Newry and South Armagh centenary commemoration committees.
Mr Murphy who is delighted to be taking part said “This is a fantastic event. In terms of the centenary commemorations it’s unique; something very different form the debates, parades, lectures, plays and other events that have been happening.
“It links the area directly to the Rising and is a fantastic way of remembering Patrick Rankin himself.
“On top of that it never did anybody any harm to jump on their bike and get pedalling for a few hours. “
Registration will be open this Sunday from 8am and the cycle departs at 9.30am sharp.
