A group of healthcare workers from Daisy Hill Hospital who have been taking part in a rolling fast in support of the people in Gaza have already raised over £13,000 for Médecins Sans Frontières. The workers embarked on their fast at the end of July in protest at the catastrophic manmade starvation spreading through Gaza due to Israel's war.
Today they stood outside Daisy Hill in protest with posters showing images of children starved by Israel or killed by their bombs.
Speaking after the protest Deirdre Murphy Linder, one of those fasting said "We are part of a group of healthcare workers, midwives, doctors, nurses and healthcare assistants from Daisy Hill Hospital who have been undertaking 24 hour rolling fasts for the last few weeks to support our healthcare colleagues in Gaza, 1600 of whom have been killed since the genocide began. Countless others have been abducted, detained and tortured. They work in impossible conditions, with little food or sleep, and desperately need our help.
"We are calling on healthcare workers throughout the UK and Ireland to join us and set up their own groups. We are already seeing similar actions in European countries like Switzerland."
The money raised from sponsorship of those fasting is being donated to Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders) to send life-saving aid to Gaza.
