Newry schoolboy Daniel Greer has passed away at home today at just sixteen years of age, after fighting leukaemia for over two years.
A pupil of the Abbey Grammar School and a talented musician who was a member of the Cross Border Orchestra of Ireland, Daniel took ill in May 2022 and urgently needed a bone marrow transplant. HIs illness led his family to ask people to sign up to the UK stem cell donor register and local individuals and organisations embraced the request with many promotional campaigns locally and further afield resulting in thousands of people registering.
After two stem cell transplants in May things seemed positive concerning Daniel's cancer treatment but cruelly just two months later he was told that his leukaemia had returned and a month later he developed sepsis. Though very ill he and his family went to the Coldplay concert in Croke Park earlier this month.
Making the devastating announcement today on the Do it for Daniel Facebook page a family representative said "We are so grateful for all the support of everyone who helped to try to save him - from his amazing medical teams, his wonderful, caring nurses, all the charities that stepped in to support his family during his long illness and, of course, to the thousands of people who signed up as bone marrow/stem cell donors in response to our desperate pleas for help.
"It is so hard to accept that he was taken from us at the age of just 16. But we know Daniel is up there at the gates, probably giving cheek to St. Peter already! Love you to the moon and back xox"
Daniel leaves behind his Father Paul and Mother Anne, his brother James and Grandmother Brigid.
Daniel is being waked at his home, 11 Dunbrae, Chancellors Road tomorrow Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 September from 1pm - 8pm. Funeral on Monday at 11.15am for 12 noon Requiem Mass in the Church of the Sacred Heart, Cloughoge.
