Newry, Mourne and Down District Council’s District Electoral Area (DEA) Forums have extended thanks to community partners who provided invaluable support during last years COVID-19 food parcel scheme.

During 2020, the Council tasked its DEA Forums with the delivery of food boxes to 2167 shielding members of our local community, under the Department for Communities Food Parcel Scheme. Faced with an enormous challenge, the DEAs put the call out to their local community groups and were overwhelmed with the response.
For the four months from April to July of 2020, members of groups from all over the district willingly delivered boxes all round their areas, making sure that isolated and shielding people were able to safely access the food they needed. The support given by the group volunteers ensured that anyone in the district who was unable to go out to shop or get a supermarket delivery had food safely delivered to their doorstep by caring members of their own community.
To show their appreciation of the support given by the groups, the seven DEA Forums recently presented plaques to representatives of the community partners. DEA Chairs and Vice-Chairs thanked the groups for their commitment to their local communities, and their willingness to give so much of their own time and energy during a uniquely difficult period.
Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Chairperson, Councillor Cathy Mason added her thanks. “Without the support and dedication of our local community groups, the Council’s District Electoral Forums would not have been able to deliver the 18,407 food boxes, which proved to be such a lifeline to the most vulnerable members of our community during 2020,” she said.
