The Department for Infrastructure are holding an Active Travel Delivery Plan, Engagement Event for the Newry, Mourne and Down area in Downpatrick tomorrow Wednesday 29 January at Downshire Civic Centre from 2pm - 7pm.
The Active Travel Delivery Plan sets out how the Department for Infrastructure will prioritise and deliver high-quality active travel infrastructure, for shorter everyday journeys within urban and rural settlements, over the next 10 years. The plan will be instrumental in ensuring that the infrastructure is consistently designed to be safe, accessible, and interconnected, encouraging more people to walk, wheel, or cycle as part of their daily routine.
Active Travel Priority Routes (Routes completed in 0-10 years) identified by DfI in this Council area include A25 Camlough Road to Needham Bridge via Jennings Park in Newry; Flying Horse Road/B1 Ardglass Road Junction to Killough Road Junction in Downpatrick; Knockchree Avenue and Mourne Esplanade in Kilkeel and Castlewellan Road to Settlement Limit in Newcastle. See www.infrastructure-ni.gov.uk to show maps etc.
Speaking about the plan Infrastructure Minister John O'Dowd said “People are at the heart of this plan because active travel is for everyone. Your journey matters, and by making little changes, and thinking about how we could travel differently, we can all make a big difference.”

Events have already been held in Derry City, Antrim, Coleraine and Lisburn and one is planned for Ballymena in early February. There is no event planned for Newry with the Downpatrick one planned to cover the Newry, Mourne and Down District Council area.
