DFI - No Decision Made on Hill Street Pilot Scheme

Following questions to the Department of Infrastructure from Newry.ie regarding the position around a Hill Street pilot scheme that was planned for earlier this week before being postponed, a Department for Infrastructure spokesperson sent us a statement saying DFI Minister Nichola Mallon will be discussing ideas with council group leaders but Minister Mallon has emphasised that it is for local people to help identify potential best options.

The Minister has also said that she is focused on addressing regional imbalance by ensuring Newry 'gets the chance to build a better way out of recovery'

The spokespersion said “The Department for infrastructure has been working with Newry, Mourne and Down District Council to consider how to improve walking and cycling facilities in Newry City Centre. As part of that discussion, a potential pilot was identified in Hill Street to facilitate social distancing for pedestrians  queuing on the footway outside a number of premises.

“However, Minister Mallon has not yet made any decision or announcement. Instead the Minister has asked officials to continue to work to explore options with the council and she will be discussing ideas with council group leaders at their up and coming meeting. Minister Mallon has been clear, DFI will support communities in this drive for change, but it is for local people through their councils to help us identify potential best options.

“We will continue to work in a positive partnership with local communities across the north, driving change from the ground up rather than top down. Minister Mallon is focused on addressing regional imbalance and is keen to ensure that Newry gets the chance to build a better way out of recovery. While discussions continue, we would encourage all to play their part in positive proactive engagement as willing partners.”
