The Department for Infrastructure will carry out a fresh review of road safety measures outside Cloughoge Primary School. The news was announced this week by Newry City Councillor Cathal King. It follows concerns raised by parents, school staff, and local residents particularly in light of a new housing development in the area which is expected to increase traffic volumes.
Councillor King said: “I’ve been engaging closely with the Department on the long-standing safety concerns outside Cloughoge School. While previous improvements such as school warning signs and road markings were an important step, the situation on the ground has changed.
"With a new housing development now under construction nearby, it’s absolutely right that a further review is being carried out. This review will look specifically at the current speed limit and the potential need for traffic calming measures.
Councillor King also took the opportunity to commend the Minister for Infrastructure, Liz Kimmins: “I want to commend Minister Liz Kimmins for her continued prioritisation of road safety. She has listened to the concerns of the community and responded with action. Her leadership is delivering practical outcomes that will help protect children, families, and all road users.
“Sinn Féin is committed to building safer, stronger communities, and ensuring the right infrastructure is in place as our areas grow. The safety of our children, especially around schools, must always come first.
"I will continue to liaise with the Department and provide regular updates to the school and the wider community as the review progresses."
