Down Senior football team booked their place in the Ulster Senior Football Final on the 22nd of July in Clones against either Donegal or Tyrone.
In a game of two halves which no doubt the strong wind contributed to it was a solitary point that produced the victory.
The first half belonged to Monaghan and it looked like they were heading in at half time trailing by nine points but then they were awarded a penalty which Aidan Carr converted bringing the half time score to Down 1:2 to Monaghan 0:11.
The second half brought a change of fortunes with Down pressing forward and chipping away at Monaghan's lead although a goal from Monaghan's Tommy Freeman certainly made things look ominous but like Down in a mirror image, Monaghan could only score one goal and two points in the second half and the rest of the action was Downs.
Benny Coulter made his return late in the second half and immediately put his name on the scoresheet with a point which certainly spurred the team on. A final point by Down's Darren O'Hagan left the score Down 1:14 and Monaghan 1:13 and although the chance was there for an equalizer it never materialized.
