This was an application for arbitration on behalf of William James D’Arcy, a minor, by his father and next friend, John D’Arcy. 66 Boat Street, Newry, the respondents being Messrs F.W. Harris and Co. Ltd, Dromalane Mill, Newry.
The boy was a doffer in the mill, and the accident took place on the 15th May, 1914. On that day the applicant when going from one frame to another slipped and fell. In falling he put his hand up to save himself, with the result that it was caught in the machinery and he lost a finger. Partial permanent incapacity was averred, and a sum of 6s 9d a week was claimed.
Mr P.J. O’Hare (Messrs O’Hare and O’Hagan) appeared for the applicant; Mr H.M. Thompson B.L. (instructed by Messrs C and H Jefferson, Belfast) represented the respondents.
Respondents offered £100 redemption. His Honour said he might be doing an illegal thing, but he would make it a conditional order that respondents pay the applicant £100 clear of costs, as full compensation for the injuries received.
