Women living with Type 1 diabetes from all over Ireland will gather in Dundalk on Saturday 10 October for 'HER Event, More Than Type One' an event created around the reality of being a woman living with the condition.
The event takes place at the Fairways Hotel in Dundalk and was created by Catherine Brady, a Type 1 diabetes coach who has lived with the condition for 23 years. Around 50 women with Type 1 diabetes are expected to attend the inaugural event.
Tickets are €69 and you can book yours at catherine-brady.com
HER Event is deliberately different from a traditional diabetes conference. The focus is women first, diabetes second, with honest conversations about issues that can have a huge impact on women's lives but are not always openly discussed.
The day will explore hormones, fertility, pregnancy, menopause, stress, sleep, training, pelvic health, mental wellbeing, body confidence and the everyday reality of managing Type 1 diabetes.
Speakers include professionals and women with lived experience, and the conversations are designed to be practical, honest and relatable rather than clinical. Dr Cathy Breen, Clinical Specialist Dietitian in Obesity & Diabetes, will speak at the event, along with Patricia McCrystal, a Chartered Psychologist specialising in diabetes distress and wellbeing, and Eimear Murphy, a pelvic health physiotherapist. Dawn Adams, a midwife who lives with Type 1 diabetes and whose work has focused on Type 1 diabetes and menopause, will also speak. Aideen Furlong will share her personal lived experience of using a GLP-1 medication while living with Type 1 diabetes.
Ms Brady said she had spent years working with women with Type 1 diabetes and kept seeing that they wanted somewhere to have conversations that do not always happen in traditional diabetes settings.
"HER isn't about being given another list of things we should be doing better. It's about women being able to come together, hear honest experiences and talk about the things that actually affect our lives," she said.
"We're women first and diabetes second - and that's the whole reason I created this event."
She added: "There are so many conversations around what women with Type 1 diabetes should or shouldn't do. I wanted HER to be a place where we could have real conversations without judgement - including the complicated, messy and sometimes uncomfortable parts of living with this condition."
HER Event, More Than Type One, takes place on Saturday 10 October 2026 at the Fairways Hotel, Dundalk, Co. Louth.
