Detectives in Newry have welcomed the sentence handed down to 23 year old Daniel Carroll at Newry Crown Court today.
Daniel Carroll was sentenced to 8 years after pleading guilty to kidnapping, false imprisonment, sexual assault, assault occassioning actual bodily harm, driving whilst disqualified and no insurance
The charges related to an incident which occurred in the Dundalk and Newry areas on 20 and 21 December 2012 when a female, who was aged 20 at the time, was kidnapped in Dundalk and taken to a house in Newry.
Speaking after the sentencing, Investigating Officer, PSNI Detective Constable McClure, said: "We are pleased for the victim in this case that the sentence handed down is a substantial one. This was an horrendous experience for a lady who was simply going about her own business when she was kidnapped and subjected to a violent and frightening ordeal.
"This case was an example of cross border cooperation at its best. We worked closely with our colleagues in An Garda Siochana from the very outset of this incident. We were in constant contact and sharing information led to the vehicle, driven by Carroll's accomplice, being traced and the main perpetrator being identified. This in turn led us to the crime scene and resulted in the offenders being apprehended within three hours of the incident being reported.
"The witnesses in this case should also be recognised for the commitment they demonstrated to this enquiry through every stage of the criminal justice system.
"Expertise from a number of departments within PSNI and AGS also helped us to build a solid case and the work of CSI, FSNI, E-Crime and CCTV units was vital in obtaining evidence for the prosecution.
"We hope that this sentence will encourage victims to put their faith in the criminal justice system and will also send a clear message to those who break the law, that there is no hiding place from justice regardless of where you offend."
