Write a commentéirígí have slammed a number of Newry businesses after Royal British Legion stalls appeared in two leading supermarkets, Tesco and Sainsbury's, selling poppy's and other pro-British military symbols and literature.
Commenting on the issue éirígí's Newry spokesperson Stephen Murney said. "It is falsely claimed that these are symbols of remembrance however the "Poppy appeal" also supports serving members of the British Armed forces.
"The British army shot people dead on the streets of Newry, therefore the appearance of these stalls is hugely offensive given the British Army's murderous history in this area and across Ireland. Indeed, just a few miles from these stores, members of the British army were acting in collusion with Loyalist death squads to target and murder innocent civilians."
Continuing Stephen explained "The British military's bloodthirsty activities also extend beyond Ireland and recent examples can be seen in Iraq and Afghanistan.
"Tesco and Sainsbury's should take into account the murderous exploits of these forces and the suffering the people of Newry had to endure over the decades living under British occupation, an occupation which continues to this day."
