Write a commentNewry, Mourne and Down District Council Chairperson, Councillor Laura Devlin has appealed for residents to enjoy safe Halloween celebrations amidst the COVID-19 response.
Cllr Devlin said, “I would like to wish everyone in our district a very safe and happy Halloween. This year due to COVID-19 restrictions the Council is unfortunately not having any organised Halloween displays.
I would like to remind everyone about the dangers of gathering in groups. Bonfires attract groups. So, I am appealing to you to not organise nor partake in any bonfires this year. The NI Executive has stated, ‘You may not organise, operate or participate in an indoor or outdoor gathering which consists of more than 15 people’. Bonfires can also present life-threatening dangers and I would like to remind residents to pay close attention to their own personal safety.
Instead, I urge the people of Newry, Mourne and Down to support our partners in the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service by reporting fly-tipped waste on public land for removal to prevent deliberate fire-setting, support the PSNI by preventing anti-social behaviour and knowing your children’s whereabouts, and support our NHS by keeping your family celebrations safe.
Finally, myself and everyone at Newry, Mourne and Down District Council hope everyone in our district has a very happy and safe time celebrating Halloween.”
