Crotlieve councillor Sinead Ennis has had a site meeting between Derryleckagh residents, Transport NI and the PSNI about safety issues on the Derryleckagh Road.

It follows concerns raised with her by residents  after which she requested a site meeting between DRD's Transport NI, the PSNI and those who live along the road.

Commenting on concerns the councillor said "The Derryleckagh Road is fast becoming one of the districts most heavily used roads as motorists regularly use this route as a short cut between Warrenpoint/greater South Down area and Newry City.

"This increased volume of traffic on a country road, that was never build to accommodate such heavy use, is taking its toll on worried residents.

"Over the past number of years there have been numerous RTC's along this stretch of road with one resident of the Derryleckagh Road being knocked down and seriously injured by a speeding car as he was trying to exit his drive way.

"The fact that we had approximately 30 residents attend the meeting shows the depth of feeling and concern surrounding this issue.

"I understand that motorists have the right to use these roads as a shortcut to avoid the often chaotic Newry City traffic but that should not be at the detriment of residents who at times are taking a huge risk by simply trying to leave their homes.

"I would like to thank the resident for their input and also DRD and PSNI for attending. I now hope mechanisms will be put in place to make motorists aware of their speed and respect the residents who live along our rural roads."
