Write a commentWork is underway in Meigh village as part of an Enviromental Improvement Scheme which should see new paving, new street lighting, gateways, railings, shrubbery and landscaping, tree surrounds to existing trees, new tree planting, removal of overhead wires and coloured road coatings.
It's part of a larger regeneration of seven villages in the Newry, Mourne and Down District Council area after the villages received £3.2 million of funding from the Mourne, Gullion and Lecale (MGL) Rural Development Partnership.
Grant funding from the Village Renewal Scheme of the Northern Ireland Rural Development Programme (NIRDP) 2014-2020, funded by the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA) and the European Commission administered by MGL’s Local Action Group (LAG), is being provided to the rural villages in conjunction with Newry, Mourne and Down District Council.
Welcome Boost for Area
Newry City Councillor Roisin Mulgrew has welcomed the news as a great boost for the area. "The scheme will see more than £400k spent in the village of Meigh with new granite kerbing, street lighting and street furniture being put in.
"As residents will also be aware we have had a number of serious accidents within the village, myself as the local councillor and members of the community association have held many meetings with PSNI and Transportni to discuss road improvements.
"We received a commitment from TransportNI to put additional safety signage on the Railway Road and Chapel Road, this work is to coincide with the environmental scheme".
Cllr Mulgrew is urging all motorists and residents to be patient during the planned works.
