The second and final phase of public realm and resurfacing works have been announced for Merchants Quay and Sugar Island in Newry which will see much needed work at Erskine Street and Canal Quay carried out, a total of nearly 1km of resurfacing. Already much of Canal Street has been resurfaced.

The scheme will run alongside previously announced works on the A27 New Street, with Minister Liz Kimmins and Minister Gordon Lyons both involved in the broader programme of improvements for the area. Part of the funding has been made available by the Department for Communities.

A total of 980 metres of streets in Newry city centre will be resurfaced as part of the works.

Canal Street will be resurfaced ultimately from its junction with Erskine Street to its junction with Sugar House Quay, while Erskine Street will be covered from its junction with Canal Street to its junction with Canal Quay. Sugar Island from its junction with Sugar House Quay to its junction with Basin Walk is also included, as is a 150-metre stretch of Merchants Quay from its junction with Canal Street.

To allow the works to be carried out safely, a series of night-time and Sunday closures will be required. Exact dates and further details are to be confirmed in due course.

While the Department has planned the works and traffic management arrangements to keep disruption to a minimum, some delays are inevitable and road users are advised to allow extra time when travelling in the area. Drivers are also asked to comply with all temporary traffic restrictions in place.

Subject to favourable weather, the works are expected to be substantially complete by Sunday, 1 March 2025, with the public to be kept informed of any changes to that timeline.
