Eugene Reavey from Whitecross doesn't think anyone will be made legally accountable for the murder of his three brothers forty eight years ago today on 4 January 1976, but he does believe that for genuine reconcilliation truth and transparency are essential. "After so many years of inaction by the authorities, our family does not expect to see anyone brought before a court to answer for these crimes, but we strongly believe truth and transparency are the only way towards real reconciliation." he said.
Reflecting on the profound impact of the murders on his family Eugene added "Our family's Christmas joy was forever marred after that fateful New Year's Day. Masked gunmen invaded our home, attacking my brothers as they watched television. The ruthless act claimed the lives of John Martin and Brian, while Anthony, just 17, suffered severe injuries."
Eugene now dedicates his efforts to promoting peace, truth, and reconciliation with the hope that future generations will recognise the futility of cruelty and heartlessness.
The 48th Anniversary Mass for the brothers will be held on Saturday, January 6 2024, at St Malachy's Church, 76 Ballymoyer Road, Whitecross, Co Armagh, at 7pm. The Reavey family, echoing their parents' plea, continues to advocate for an end to violence and strives for reconciliation and lasting peace.
