Write a commentNewry and Armagh MLA Justin McNulty MLA has called on the Executive to bring forward a Green Homes’ Grant Fund to encourage energy conservation and the retrofitting of homes.
It follows an announcement earlier this year by the UK Chancellor announcing £3 billion of funding for green buildings, including a £2 billion Green Homes’ Grant. The scheme was designed to enable homeowners to upgrade their homes and properties with energy-saving features, such as insulation or double-glazing. The focus is to reduce energy usage and improve the energy efficiency of a property.
Mr McNulty said "We have an Affordable Warmth Scheme operated through the Department of Communities, the Housing Executive and local Councils but this scheme announced by the Chancellor is much bigger and much more expansive. We are used to replacing old boiler systems, roof or cavity wall insulation and the upgrading of windows. But this scheme allows for much more including introducing new solar thermal measures, upgrading doors and installing new draft proofing measures.
"This scheme has the potential to protect our environment, save householders money and create jobs in the retrofitting of homes. This can be a win win for all involved."
In conclusion, Mr McNulty said, ‘As with most funding announcements in London there is a Barnett consequential for the Executive. That means our Executive should benefit from a proportion of the £3billion and I want to see it invested in protecting our environment, retro fitting homes and creating jobs in the green economy. I have raised this with the Finance Minister and asked for a Green Homes Grant Fund to be developed here."
