Write a commentNewry’s oldest resident Mrs Sarah Brady was laid to rest on Saturday following a moving ceremony in St Catherine’s Dominican Church, a church she loved and a church in the shadow of her home where she lived up till her death.
It's often said when an older person dies that none of their friends are left to go to the funeral, but this certainly wasn't the case on Saturday with a very large attendance of her family circle and many friends, including Deputy First Minister, Martin McGuinness.
Sarah known as Sally died peacefully at home on 4 May and leaves behind daughters Mary, Theresa and Lilian and son Mickey.
107 year old Sarah lived all her life in the Ballybot area of the city and was very well known and respected by all.
Born on the third of March 1909 she lived through many world changing events including two world wars. She lived through the Easter Rising and came into the world before they had even started on the Titanic.
Fr Stephen Tumilty, a friend and neighbour of the family celebrated the funeral mass while son Mickey, MP for Newry and Armagh gave the eulogy.
Burial was in Monkshill Cemetery.
