SDLP Fews councillor John Feehan condemned those responsible for an arson attack on a furniture warehouse on the Millvale Road, Bessbrook on Friday afternoon.
The SDLP representative who was called to the scene by concerned residents said: "This act has endangered not only jobs but also lives and has totally appalled both myself and residents of the Millvale Road. This warehouse is located inbetween residential properties and a plant machinary sales yard and could have been much worse if it were not for the rapid response and bravery of the Fire Service in entering the building to ensure the blaze was put under control.
"Four fire fighting appliances from as far away as Warrenpoint and Newtownhamilton were involved in fighting this fire which at one point saw the entire Millvale Road closed. That is four teams of fire fighters who would not have been available to deal with another emergency.
"This was nothing more than reckless vandalism and I would strongly urge anyone with information about who was responsible for this fire to pass it on to the proper authorities."
