Friday the first of February, was greeted by hundreds of happy smiling Samaritans' Volunteers who had assembled at Newry's Bus Station and at Translink railway stations and bus centres across the Province, determined to show commuters, both going and coming, that this was actually a good day; it was Feel Good Friday.
Feel Good Friday is a Samaritans initiative designed to emphasise the message that Life is good, every Life is important, and every Life is worth living.
Travellers feeling particularly laid-back were encouraged to go to work in their pyjamas and slippers, but even the more inhibited commuters were treated to cheerful music, small gifts and a free raffle for Ulster Rugby tickets. If you got your name entered in the draw you could still be lucky; it's not over yet because the draw continues each week for the next fortnight.
After some initial puzzlement members of the public reacted very positively and went off wearing their new-found smiles. They presumably also have a better understanding of Samaritans' place in their community.
Your local Samaritans are located at 19 St Coleman's Park, Newry, and offer emotional support 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. If you need to talk, you can call in at the Branch, ring 028 (048) 302 66366, or email us at jo@samaritans.org.
