Work has restarted this month on the final part of the Carlingford Lough Greenway link between Victoria Lock and the border with work expected to be completed later this year or at the latest early 2025. The section will comprise of a boardwalk along the waters edge with the greenway linking at Cornamucklagh to the already completed section from the border to Carlingford. Traffic lights are in place as work progresses.
Work on the Narrow Water Bridge is also continuing with a temporary section of the greenway diverting cyclists and walkers while work is carried out close to the round tower. When the bridge opens, cyclists from Warrenpoint will be able to cross over to County Louth and make their journey to Newry along the greenway rather than take the present route alongside the busy dual carriageway.
A route through Newry City Centre that links the greenway to the Newry Canal Towpath is something that has been investigated and is much needed but at present there are only plans for a stretch from Sugar Island to Needham Bridge as part of the new Newry Arts Centre project.
