Write a commentPhase one of a £2.9M flood alleviation scheme is on the way for Newry following the announcement that Infrastructure Minister Nichola Mallon has signed the Confirmation Order to allow it to proceed.
Phase one of the scheme is expected to commence in 2021/22. The remaining significant works identified for the main Newry River / Canal and upstream flood storage are being progressed through two further phases.
Speaking about the project Minister Mallon said “I have seen first-hand the devastation flooding can cause. This initial scheme will cost around £2.9 million to implement and will provide flood alleviation to residential and commercial properties located at Armagh Road, Downshire Road, Craigmore Way and Greenbank Industrial Estate, Newry. I hope this brings some comfort to people in Newry.”
Phase One works include upgrading sections of the existing Armagh Road Drain culvert, an upgraded inlet grille on the Armagh Road Drain, upgrading the existing Downshire Stream culvert, and construction of flood walls and embankments along the Knox-Pebbles Drain at Greenbank Industrial Estate.
Newry and Armagh MLA, Justin McNulty has welcomed the news. The MLA commented “I welcome the significant investment in Newry today, as Minister Mallon has signed off on a £2.9 million river Flood Alleviation Scheme.
“Families and businesses across Newry have suffered as a result of flooding for too long and the investment in this flood relief will bring huge comfort to people. I would like to thank the Minister to making our community a priority.”
