Flooding is becoming a major issue in Newry already this evening with several premises around Canal Quay and Basin Quay already flooding. Newry Canal has breached it's banks following a day of rising flood water from the Clanrye River making its way into the canal from along the Newry Canal Towpath.

The flooding started around 7pm and dozens of staff from the Department for Infrastructure placed sandbags on the river wall in front of Newry Town Hall. The DfI are also engaged in trying to displace the water around Basin Quay and Basin Walk.
With high tide expected around 12.30pm the potential for more severe flooding is very real.
With the Met Office issuing an amber weather warning for counties Down and Armagh from 9.00pm tonight until 9.00am tomorrow, Tuesday 31st October the PSNI have asked people to stay at home where possible and not make unnecessary journeys.
