Write a commentNewry and Mourne District Council would like to inform residents that some biodegradable bags can now be used in the brown bins. Biodegradable bags are available free of charge from the Council. The bags can be used to hold food waste and can be recycled in the brown bin. Only the biodegradable bags provided by the Council can be used in your brown bin.
Residents are advised not to use any other type of biodegradable bags as these may not be accepted and your bin will not be collected.
The biodegradable bags are available for a limited time at Newry and Mourne District Council’s Greenbank Offices.
20,000 residents in the district now have a brown bin, which can be used for all food waste and garden waste, including items such as waste bread, cereals, teabags, egg shells, meat and cooked food leftovers, as well as hedge clippings and grass cuttings.
The Director of Technical and Leisure Services, Mr Jim McCorry said, “Statistically we throw out 1/3 of the food we buy which makes up 20% of all our household waste. To help residents recycle as much food waste as possible in their brown bin, the Council now have biodegradable bags available to collect from our offices. Residents are reminded that only biodegradable bags provided by the council can be used and not to use any other type of bags in their brown bin’.
For those households with no brown bins, who would like to recycle their garden waste, they can bring it to their local Household Recycling Centres.
