Write a commentWith a doubling of brown bin food waste being processed over the past two years by Newry, Mourne and Down District Council this weekend sees a giveaway of compost made from the waste from local Household Recycling Sites.
This huge increase has come about as residents have taken recycling food waste seriously, in line with Council priorities. All the food waste diverted is processed into a nutrient rich compost by a local company Natural World Products (NWP).
To mark this achievement, local people will now have an opportunity to try this compost on their own plants and gardens. Green fingered residents can collect one bag of compost at the ‘giveaway’ events on Friday 10, and Saturday 11, May at all Household Recycling Centres (HRC’s) in the district.
Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Deputy Chairperson, Councillor Oksana McMahon said, “We should be very proud of how far we have come in improving our recycling of brown waste over the past two years. Not only are we contributing to improving our environment by recycling, we are also producing a useful compost that can be utilised by gardeners throughout the district.
“I am personally delighted at our progress and look forward to seeing even more of our brown bin waste being recycled-turning waste into gardening gold.”
The compost giveaway recognises and rewards the efforts residents make to use their bins correctly. It aims to promote the benefits of home composting and the great results achieved by using compost containing recycled material.
The giveaway is limited to one bag per customer and the distribution of the compost is on a first come-first served basis, so residents are advised get there early to avoid disappointment.
