Carrickcruppen's Caroline O'Hanlon has today been picked as the flag bearer for the Northern Ireland Commonwealth Games team. The team are presently in Australia getting ready to compete in the 2018 games. Caroline plays for Larkfield and Manchester Thunder.
Commenting on Twitter the Northern Ireland Netball team captain said "What an honour and privilege to lead out this fantastic team tomorrow" The games open tomorrow Wednesday on the Australian Gold Coast and once the formalities are out of the way Caroline will lead her Netball team out for their first game Thursday 5 April against the hosts Australia. Following will be games against South Africa, Jamica and Barbados.
Apart from Netball Caroline plays on the Armagh Ladies Football team as well as for her home team Carrickcruppen. In GAA Caroline has won three All Star awards and was the 2014 Ladies Gaelic Footballer of the Year.
Commenting on the selection Northern Ireland Chef de Mission, Robert McVeigh, said: “The announcement of the team flagbearer is always a highlight of the Commonwealth Games. For Gold Coast 2018 we’re delighted to name Caroline O’Hanlon as TeamNI’s flagbearer.
"Caroline has been selected due to the leadership qualities exhibited amongst our team members from across the different sports represented. As a sportswoman, she displays great skill as a player and has shown incredible commitment and dedication to reach the top of her sport. Caroline is a fine ambassador for our country, our association, our team and sport in general.”
