DG: This time my Hero is a lovely native of Newry Laura McShane.
Laura is a lady who decided to move to New York for better life. Was it easy road to get where she is now? What does Laura think about her home city? Let me show you more about Laura and her amazing personality. Thank you Laura for giving me the opportunity to get an interview with you for my project From Zero to Hero.
LMc: Thanks Daniel! I’m in good company!
DG: What was growing up in Newry like for you? What memories have you got from that period?
LMc: Growing up in Newry was lovely. The family values in this city are very strong and that was a valuable thing to learn from an early age. Most of my memories are from spending time with family - I spent a lot of time with my nana, those are my fondest memories! I went to all girls schools my entire life, grew up in a house full of girls and so I definitely grew up in a matriarchy (girl power!) I was involved in Newry’s NewPoint Players drama group, took art classes and was on the Debate team in Sacred Heart! I really gravitated toward the creative side of things.
DG: Is Newry a diverse city in your eyes?
LMc: Although it has some way to go, Newry has made huge progress in terms of diversity. Since I was in school, I’ve seen increasing nationalities, religions and cultures being welcomed with open arms into our communities - which has only benefited us and enriched us as a community. Children in schools have more exposure to different languages and ways of life through their friends - preparing them to go into the real world. We’ve become a more open minded city. We definitely need to see more representation from those with different skin colors. I hope that we continue to evolve.
DG:What made you move to New York?
LMc: I had always known in my gut that I would move away at least for a while. I wanted to experience the world and there is no better place than the melting pot that is New York! DG:Could you tell me what you currently are doing for living? And what are your big projects so far?
LMc: I am an Events and Marketing Manager for one of NYC’s prominent Hospitality groups. I have organized galas to honor amazing Irish legends such as Liam Neeson, Gabrielle Byrne and Roma Downey! I’ve hosted launch parties for famous Authors and Broadway shows. I’m very proud of that.
DG: Was it easy to build career while living in New York?
LMc: No I had to learn very quickly that there was a lot of competition and obstacles to even get started in NY. New York takes no prisoners and you have to work very very hard to impress anyone. In order to get a Visa I had to save a lot of money and seek out great legal representation to file that for me. Then you have to spend a year as an unpaid ‘intern’ and I had to work in a bar to make ends meet. I really loved working in a bar but the hours are tough! You have to really put yourself out there. In New York and make sure you are constantly networking to make a name for yourself. But it is worth it!
DG: How do you stay motivated in such a high paced environment as New York City?
LMc: Everyday you get to meet serious Hustlers and impressive people. Being around those people keeps you on your toes. The energy is infectious and inspiring. You are expected to put in extra hours and the city is far too much fun not to be very social in! Not a lot of time to sleep - but alas, that’s why they call it the city that never sleeps!
DG: Could you name three things which Newry can offer that New York never will?
LMc: 1. Kindness from strangers - a hello on the street! 2.Respect for work life balance 3.Friar Tucks- no competition.
DG: Does diversity matter in the World you think?
LMc: Absolutely. Diversity benefits everyone. Different perspectives, skills and cultures benefits a community Economically, Socially a Politically. Diversity allows us to respect and enjoy one another’s differences.
DG: My last question is what are your future plans for 2021?
LMc: It can only go up from here! I plan to settle into the quieter side of life and chase more creative projects! I adore the Hospitality industry and hope to spend 2021 helping New York get back on it’s feet after this horrible year. By the end of 2021 I would like to have set up my own consultancy business to help bars, restaurants and hotels set up lucrative events programmed.
