DUP leader Gavin Robinson has welcomed Gareth Wilson to the party's MLA team as he officially takes up his seat as MLA for Newry and Armagh following the retirement of William Irwin. Wilson was previously a Councillor with Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council,
Robinson said: "I'm delighted to welcome Gareth to our MLA team today as he officially takes up his seat as MLA for Newry & Armagh. Gareth has always been a champion for the constituency and for the people of that area. He will now continue that focus as their Assembly Member, focused on the issues that matter. Whilst others are either attempting to undermine devolution or Northern Ireland itself, the DUP will continue to make Northern Ireland work."
The DUP leader added: "I look forward to working with Gareth as part of a refreshed and reinvigorated DUP team in the Assembly."
Wilson said: "It is an honour to have been selected by the Party to fill this role and I am delighted to have officially taken up post today. I want to pay tribute to William for his hard work and dedication and I intend to build on the strong foundations he has left."
The new MLA continued: "I will continue to be a strong voice for the people of the Constituency and as the only pro-Union representative for Newry & Armagh within the Assembly I will always seek to promote our place within the United Kingdom and maximise the benefits that brings to everyone."
