Fundraising by the Newry Branch of the Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaign (IPSC) has contributed towards a new mobile maternity clinic for Gaza.
Currently the clinic has been completed in Egypt and is ready to be sent to Gaza. The IPSC Newry branch was one of several solidarity groups around the north of Ireland to hold fund-raising events for the construction of the clinic, which was organised by Palestine Aid Ireland. This included a month-long Gaza film festival in March, hosted at Finegan and Son café in Newry.
John Hurson of Palestine Aid Ireland, who was in Egypt for the completion of the clinic, said: “With virtually every hospital and medical clinic in Gaza destroyed or badly damaged, this unit and others will help the tens of thousands of expectant and new mothers trying to survive amidst the rubble of Gaza. As well as facing starvation and death and injury from constant bombing, pregnant women and those with young babies have lost access to vital services like prenatal and postnatal care, family planning, and treatment for infections and most women are forced to give birth in tents without any medical assistance. We want to thank everyone who attended the fundraising events. Without their support this clinic wouldn’t have been possible.”
This clinic is one of four, plus 14 ambulances, waiting in Egypt to be allowed into Gaza. It is now under the care of Medics Worldwide, a global non-profit healthcare service. You can contribute to their Gaza Hospital Appeal at www.medicsww.com
