The stretch of Carlingford Lough Greenway linking Omeath to the border is progressing at a pace once again. Works restarted once again on the project in late August and currently gravel is being laid on the stretch right up to the border. The stretch from Victoria Lock to Omeath will command stunning views across to Narrow Water Keep and the new Narrow Water bridge once built.

Progress on the Newry side had stalled following a decision not to progress with the path through Fathom Forest but keep it close to the water with a section of boardwalk on much of the stretch from Victoria Lock up to the border where space isn't available landward for a path. Currently planning permission is being sought for the project with a positive decision paving the way for the completion of the project on the Northern side. It's envisaged that the decision will be made soon with works potentially starting in late 2023.

DAERA have suggested that Construction works (including piling works) should be completed outside of the breeding bird season which runs 1st March to 31st August, to avoid disturbance to breeding birds.
From Victoria Lock to the border the proposed Greenway consists of the following: 4m wide timber boardwalk (1025m in length), 3m wide unbound gravel greenway (375m) and 3m wide bound asphalt greenway (110m). Associated infrastructure and works include: fencing, vehicle restraint system (crash barriers), edging kerbs for bound greenway, directional/trail head signage; piling installation for boardwalk and drainage works.
Once complete walkers and cyclists will be able to take a dedicated path all the way from Newry to Carlingford, negating the need to cycle on the busy Fathom line.
