A proposed Warrenpoint to Newcastle Greenway is one of four greenways that are to receive funding from the Irish Government's €2 million Shared Island Greenways Development Fund. the greenway would link up to the Carlingford Lough Greenway via the Narrow Water Bridge once completed.
The other projects identified are Sligo to Enniskillen, Derry to Buncrana and Lifford to Derry. Funding will be administered by the Department of Transport to the relevant local authorities, with Newry, Mourne and Down District Council among those in line to receive support.
Just over £40,000 has already been allocated to Newry, Mourne and Down District Council to support a technical feasibility study of the proposed Warrenpoint to Newcastle (via Kilkeel) greenway. This includes a £20,000 allocation from the Department for Infrastructure, with the remainder coming from the Department of Transport's Shared Island Funding.
Welcoming the announcement Infrastructure Minister Kimmins said: "Through collaborative working with our counterparts in the Government of Ireland, I'm delighted that funding has been identified to explore further expansion our cross-border greenway network and to build on the success achieved to date."
She added that the funding would seek to build on the success of the Carlingford Lough Greenway, extending the network and helping to showcase the landscapes of County Down and the border region.
The minister said her officials had been working closely with colleagues in both the Department of Transport and Transport Infrastructure Ireland to develop a coherent network of cross-border greenways, supported by the findings of a recent feasibility study.
The Shared Island Greenways Development Fund was established in November 2025 to support the progression of greenway projects in the border region. Further Department for Infrastructure funding is expected to be available in 2026 and 2027, subject to the public expenditure approval process.
