Cyclists of all ages took to the Carlingford Lough Greenway on Saturday for the inaugural Omeath Community Bike Ride. As well as cyclists from Omeath there were wheelers from Newry, Donegal, Fermanagh, Portadown, Drogheda and Dundalk and even a visitor from Dubai with all enjoying the glorious morning and beautiful scenery along the way.
Participants travelled north from Omeath to the border, where the final bit of linkage from border to Victoria Lock is nearing completion. On their way back they stopped on the greenway at the Narrow Water Bridge site where they got an update of progress of the project. The works are currently running to timetable and the bridge will be a link between Warrenpoint and Omeath for cyclists and walkers as well as motorists.
The fixed span and deck sections for the bridge are expected to arrive in the spring of 2026 with the lifting section in early 2027. It's hoped that the bridge will be finished for October 2027. Following the update cyclists progressed to Carlingford before returning to Omeath.
The event was organised by Louth Councillor Fiona Mhic Conchoille and sponsored by Louth Local Sports Partnership and Louth County Council. Cllr Mhic Conchoille thanked everyone who contributed to the success of the day including Louth Disability Cycling Club, the staff at Bam Construction on the Narrow Water Bridge Project, CAFE ROSA, Carlingford Marina, An Táin Cafe Bar, On Yer Bike and Scoil Naomh Lorcán.
