Access to Victoria Lock via the Carlingford Lough Greenway from the Albert Basin won't be available for the rest of 2023. The popular path is closed halfway along at the bridge/ overflow weir into the Clanrye River so wakers or cyclists will only be able to reach that point. Victoria Lock car park is also closed.
Newry, Mourne and Down District Council are currently working on the continuation of the greenway towards the border in the car park at Victoria Lock hence the reason for the closure of the tourist amenity. It is expected that two short stretches of greenway, one at Victoria Lock and one at the border will be complete by the end of December with the greenway in between, a combination of boardwalk and path planned to be complete by mid 2024.
A sign put up by council at the greenway entrance at the Albert Basin explains that from Monday 6 November to 31 December the Victoria Lock Car-Park and Greenway (between Victoria Lock and Canal overflow weir is closed, but that you can still access the stretch from the Albert Basin to the weir. The sign explains that the greenway stretch is closed for "essential maintenance" which we believe is associated with damage caused by flooding, with potholes in the surface caused by material from the path washing away.
When completed in mid 2024 it will be possible to access Newry from Carlingford by bicycle or on foot via the greenway without having to travel on the Omeath Road.
