The Habitat ReStore in Newry

Habitat for Humanity Ireland is working alongside the Probation Board for Northern Ireland in a partnership which will help make communities in Northern Ireland safer.

The organisation which has a store on the Dublin Road in Newry has received funding from the Probation Board to assist it in delivering community service placements in their social enterprise, Habitat ReStore.  There are currently six Habitat ReStores in Ireland; Lisburn, Drogheda, Ballymena, Belfast, Newry, Newtownards, with stores due to open in Lisnagelvin and Glasnevin in 2025. Habitat is a Christian housing organisation which welcomes people of all faiths and none to help build a world where everyone has a decent place to live.

Habitat's ReStore is the low-cost DIY store that builds sustainable community and directly tackles poverty locally. By selling new and used building and home improvement materials ReStore helps local people to improve their homes at low cost. ReStore also provides skills and employability training for people of all ages and backgrounds and diverted more than 1,600 tons of reusable waste from landfill last year.

Chief Executive of the Probation Board for Northern Ireland Amanda Stewart said: “PBNI works in partnership with a range of organisations across the community and voluntary sector and we are delighted to be in partnership with Habitat Ireland in order to assist us to reduce reoffending.

PBNI is committed to working in every community in Northern Ireland. We are also committed to working in partnership. Indeed, we believe that in order to rehabilitate and resettle those who have offended we must work collaboratively. This partnership will help us carry out our role of changing lives for safer communities.”

Jenny Williams, Chief Executive of Habitat Ireland has welcomed the funding provided by the Probation Board for Northern Ireland and said: “We welcome this partnership with PBNI which is an organisation with its roots in every community in Northern Ireland.
