As part of the nationwide One Million Trees Project Heather Park was the venue for an exciting Newry and Mourne District Council tree planting event involving local school children and volunteers from across Newry and Mourne.

One Million Trees is a charity, not-for-profit, cross-border, community and environmental initiative which will plant one million young, native trees at many different sites across both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland.

Deputy Mayor Councillor Packie McDonald also got his hands dirty on the day, saying “the Council are excited to take part in this environmental initiative and we hope the people of Newry can enjoy these trees for years to come”.

Danielle Begley, Biodiversity Officer for the Council explained, “trees are of value from the moment they are planted and well beyond any of our lifetimes. Ireland is one of the least forested countries in Europe; with climate change predicted to cost many billions over coming years, each tree planted will soak up three months worth of the Carbon dioxide produced by an average person”.

A big thank you to the pupils and staff from St Mary’s High School, St Brigid’s Primary Drumilly, Windsor Hill and St Ronan’s Primary Schools Newry along with members of the Conservation Volunteers, Headway Charity and Threeways Community Association who took part and without whose help this large scale project would not have been possible.
