Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins has launched a significant £590,000 carriageway resurfacing project on the B8 Hilltown Road in Newry, with works underway.
The comprehensive resurfacing scheme covers a 2-kilometre stretch of Hilltown Road, extending from the previous resurfacing area near the roundabout to approximately 100 metres beyond the Derryleckagh Road junction.
The Infrastructure Minister said: "This is a substantial investment for the Newry area which will deliver significant benefits for local businesses, residents and road users. The investment demonstrates my commitment to improving our road network, which is vital for connecting our businesses and communities. This work will greatly improve the strength and surface quality of this section of the road network to the benefit of local residents, businesses and those travelling in the Newry area. Work is expected to be substantially completed by Friday 11 July 2025. I would like to thank residents, local businesses and commuters for their patience while this essential infrastructure work is carried out."
To ensure safe implementation of the project, weekday lane closures will be in effect from Monday 12 May to Friday 27 June 2025, operating Monday through Friday between 09:30 and 16:30. These restrictions will be accompanied by a temporary 40 mph speed limit and no-overtaking order. Additional overnight road closures and two weekend closures will be necessary to complete the resurfacing operations, with dates to be announced.
Although the Department has carefully organised work schedules and traffic management to minimise disruption, motorists should anticipate some delays. Road users are advised to allow extra journey time when travelling near the works area and to observe all temporary traffic restrictions.
Weather permitting, the project is scheduled to be substantially completed by Friday 11 July 2025. The Department will issue updates regarding any changes to this timeline.
