Write a commentSinn Féin MP Conor Murphy along with Margaret Ritchie MP and Mark Durkan MP has met with David Gauke Treasury Minister and senior HMRC Officials in London to discuss the ongoing issue of the closure of the HMRC office in Newry.
Speaking after the meeting Mr Murphy said "The Treasury Minister and Officers were pressed on the closure plans for Newry, the equality requirements and the treatment of staff as although HMRC claim it carried out a consultation with staff, no equality impact assessment was conducted.The fact is that it will disproportionately affect women. The closure of the HRMC office in Newry with the loss of almost 100 jobs will have a huge impact on the local economy. It was made clear to those present that answers were needed."
Concluding the Newry and Armagh MP said that Sinn Féin would continue to engage with HMRC to ensure that all rights and entitlements of the workers are respected.
"Further engagements will take place.with HMRC. It is essential to ensure that all rights and entitlements of the workers are respected.
