It's hoped that the long running saga surrounding the completion of the Carlingford Lough Greenway all the way from the Albert Basin in Newry to Carlingford Village will soon be over, with Newry, Mourne and Down District Council's latest suggestion being that it could be open in early summer 2025.
Work is continuing on the remaining greenway stretch between the border and Victoria Lock with the provision of a boardwalk stretch being the most technically challenging part of the entire route. Piles have been driven into the waters of the Newry River to support a suspended boardwalk that will finally connect the completed stretches between Albert Basin and Victoria Lock and between the Border and Carlingford.
In a reply to Newry.ie a Council spokesperson said "The Council is continuing to work closely with its Contractor, Consultants and all partners to complete outstanding project elements with a view to completion and opening in early Summer 2025."
The project has been beset with delays including difficulty getting planning permission and funding issues. Planning was originally sought for a route that travelled through the Fathom Forest but this wasn't permitted due to the need to cross the road. In November 2023 planning permission was granted for the new route along the waters edge and work was expected to be completed in late 2024/ early 2025 although this timeline has slipped.
