After 33 incredible years, John Dalzell OBE is retiring from the Hospice Christmas Sit Out and is entrusting the annual fundraiser to hospice staff and volunteers and members of the dedicated sit out team.
During his time leading the initiative, the Christmas Sit Out raised an outstanding £2.36 million, ensuring that thousands of local people and their families were able to receive the care and support they need. The remarkable tradition has been shaped by years of incredible dedication from John and his team and the fantastic generosity of the community.
Evora Hospice, formerly Southern Area Hospice is about more than medical support, focusing on dignity, comfort, love and compassion. One nurse from the hospice explained: "We cannot change the outcome, but we can make every moment as comfortable and meaningful as possible."
Every year, more and more local people are turning to the hospice for support, but raising the necessary funds is becoming increasingly difficult. The Christmas Sit Out has always been a vital source of funding for their care, and as the initiative begins this new chapter, community support is more important than ever.
The sit out will take place at its usual spot in Marcus Square on Hill Street, Newry, where the familiar hospice trailer will be stationed from 13 to 24 December. In addition to the sit out on Hill Street, collections will take place around the city at Fiveways Shopping Complex and Damolly Retail Park.
