Write a commentIf you've always wanted to go to India and never had the chance or had no one to go with, now could be the time, with the Southern Area Hospice having it's newest trek there. You have plenty of time to get prepared and fundraising as well as it's not till October 2017!
The Hospice trek will take place in Dharamsala, India, home of the Dalai Lama from 5th – 15th October 2017.
The challenge which will raise vital funds for Southern Area Hospice Services begins in Dharamsala, where the Dalai Lama and the centre of the Tibetan Community are situated – at the heart of the world’s highest mountain range, the Himalaya’s.
The 5 day trek will see participants passing through the Kingdom of Gaddi – a semi nomadic race who spend months wandering the high passes with their cattle. With spectacular views of the Daula Dhar Mountain Range, the trek will take the group through rhododendron forests, passing through Hindu settlements and Buddhist Monasteries. At the end of the amazing challenge participants will have some free time to explore the incomparable Taj Mahal - one of the new Seven Wonders of the World!
All the money raised through the trek will help Southern Area Hospice Services to continue their work providing care and support to local people who are living with Cancer and other life-limiting illnesses, such as Multiple Sclerosis and Motor Neurone Disease. Care is provided through a number of services including a 12 bed in-patient unit in Newry, Day Hospice units in Newry and South Tyrone Hospital, Dungannon, Outpatient clinics in Craigavon, Daisy Hill and South Tyrone Hospitals, a community nurse in the Armagh and Dungannon District as well as Bereavement and Carer support in the Donaldson Centre, Newry and the Resource Centre in Irish Street, Dungannon.
With a fundraising target of £2.42 million in 2016 alone, Southern Area Hospice Services rely heavily on the local community to help them reach their target so they can continue to provide care and support to people at a time when they need it most.

Overseas challenges are a brilliant way to raise funds for your local hospice as well as meeting new people and having an experience of a lifetime. The Hospice Fundraising Department will be on hand throughout the campaign to give you support, advice and guidance with your fundraising. We also organise regular meetings to allow you to meet the group and help get you prepared for the challenge.”
A trek information night will take place at Southern Area Hospice, Courtenay Hill, Newry on Monday 9th May 2016 at 7pm.
