Older people in Northern Ireland are being encouraged to check whether they qualify for financial help with housing costs through the Housing Benefit scheme. The Housing Executive is reminding pension-age residents that support may be available even if they have never claimed before.
Housing Benefit, funded by the Department for Communities and delivered by the Housing Executive, can help pensioners who rent their homes by covering some or all of their rent and rates. Pension-aged homeowners may also be eligible for help with rates, depending on their individual circumstances.
Gillian Greer, Housing Executive Assistant Director of Housing Benefit, said many older people may not be aware of the full range of support open to them. "Many older people may not realise the full range of support available to them and, while they carefully manage their finances, rising living costs can still place pressure on household budgets."
She added: "Our message is simple – don't miss out on support that could help ease financial pressures. Even if you've never claimed before, or your circumstances have changed, it's worth checking what you may be entitled to."
Ms Greer also highlighted that Housing Benefit is not being replaced by Universal Credit for pension-age customers. "Housing Benefit remains available to pension age customers and is not replaced by Universal Credit for this group."
Claims are assessed on the basis of individual circumstances, including income, savings and household details. "Support with rates is also means-tested and designed to assist those on low incomes," Ms Greer said. "Claims are assessed based on individual circumstances, including income, savings and household details so contact us to get the advice you need."
