Newry and Armagh MP Dáire Hughes has brought up the debate around Irish unity at an international congress in Portugal.
The first congress of the European Left Alliance (ELA) which is made up of members from several left-wing parties from Portugal, France, Spain, Sweden, Denmark, Poland and Finland was held in Porto, Portugal.
Mr Hughes added that it's now time for the Irish government to commence planning for Irish reunification.
The MP also spoke of the need for international cooperation to help address major global issues facing workers and families.
Mr Hughes said "The ELA is a new left-wing European organisation committed to delivering workers’ rights, social progress, peace, solidarity, equality, climate justice, environmental protection and sustainable development," said Mr. Hughes after addressing the congress.
“The conference focused on the importance of international cooperation in tackling some of the major global issues facing workers and families, including standing against racism and in solidarity with the beleaguered people of Palestine."
“I addressed the conference on the current political situation in Ireland and the growing momentum towards Irish unity.
“It is time for the Irish government to commence planning for Irish reunification. Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael may be content with the status quo, but we are not." he added.
In conclusion the MP said “Sinn Féin will continue to use every forum to work with a wide range of progressive forces in Ireland and internationally to advance the cause of Ireland and achieve social, economic and cultural liberty.”
