Newry and Armagh MP Dáire Hughes has said the 50th anniversary of the Miami Showband Massacre is a stark reminder of the urgent need for truth, justice and accountability for victims and survivors of British state collusion.
Speaking after attending the 50th anniversary commemoration in Buskhill Newry, the Newry Armagh MP said: “It was an honour to attend the commemoration to mark 50 years since the horrific murders of Fran O’Toole, Tony Geraghty and Brian McCoy by loyalists acting in collusion with British state agents.
“This horrific attack remains one of the darkest chapters in our history and it is a stark reminder of the British government’s continued failure to deliver justice for victims of state violence and collusion.
“Survivors Des Lee and Stephen Travers have shown incredible strength in their campaign for truth in the face of denial and cover-up by the British state. Their courage continues to inspire people across this island and beyond."
Mr Hughes added “At the commemoration, Stephen Travers also made a powerful call for peace and justice in the Middle East and demanding an end to the ongoing genocide in Palestine. The parallels he drew between Ireland’s legacy of occupation and the suffering of the Palestinian people are deeply resonant.”
The Newry and Armagh MP concluded: “Sinn Féin will continue to stand with victims and survivors, and we repeat our call on the British government to scrap the cynical and cruel Legacy Act and implement human rights-compliant mechanisms that can finally deliver truth, justice and accountability for families still searching for answers.”
