The Society of St Pius X held their annual Mass today to celebrate the Feast of the Assumption at Ballyholland Mass Rock near Newry today. Several hundred turned out at the historic site for what was a family occasion as much as a celebration of faith. In Fr Patrick Abbet's sermon the priest recalled the Mass Rock and a time when priests were persecutted for saying Mass and how they covered their face so even if a member of the congregation was tortured, they couldn't tell who the priest was.
Following Mass a procession took place down along the laneway from the Mass Rock with a statue of the Virgin Mary carried aloft preceeding the congregation.
