Write a commentMembers of campaining group Newry 2020 have met with Infrastructure Ministe and SDLP representatives to discuss their exciting proposals for the Albert Basin public park in Newry.
Assembly Member for Newry and Armagh Justin McNulty MLA led the delegation who met online to discuss the park and the part it will play in the redevelopment of the entire region.
Mr McNulty explained, "Newry 2020 have been the driving force behind proposals for a Public Park in Newry for many years now and the SDLP have been their strongest supporters from the get go. The project has taken significant steps forward though Newry, Mourne and Down District Council in recent months and this week we took the opportunity to brief Minister Mallon on the latest plans for a world class City Park for Newry.
"This past year of the drudgery of lockdowns has taught us all to value open and public spaces even more than before. For the wellbeing of the people we now know the vital importance of green and open spaces in the heart of built up places like Newry. Green, open public space is essential for our emotional and physical wellbeing and I am delighted that the ambitious plans are being developed and progressed in Newry led by Newry 2020."
The MLA continued "During our meeting with Minister Mallon not only did we talk up the positives of a City Park for the people of Newry, but also how important greenways and blue ways connecting Newry and Carlingford and the Cooley Peninsula and linking into a Great Eastern Greenway .
"The Minister shared our excitement for the project and the huge potential it has to transform Newry and the wider Mourne and Cooley areas. We have agreed to continue our engagement with the Minister and her officials to establish where we can work together and ensure real synergies between the City Park plans and other pedestrian and cycle link ways."
